About the artist:
Creativity has been in her blood since she was a child. Drawing and sculpting were her favorite activities in her youth. In the years that followed, she discovered the possibilities of working with watercolor, acrylic and oil paint. After working in the Netherlands for years, she has been living with her husband on one of the smallest Canary Islands, La Gomera, since 2013. The deep blue of the surrounding ocean, the rugged nature and the beautiful colors of the painted houses have a special influence on her work.
Mirjam started selling small minimalist wall decorations made with Sea glass, driftwood and pebbles at a craft market: Beach-Art. It became a success with returning customers and curious visitors who only knew her work ‘by hearsay’ and wanted to see her work in real life. In the following years, it grew to sales at various markets and galleries. This work is for sale in various places on La Gomera.
In 2015, she started making Calligrams: images made by writing minuscule words, a name or a text, with which she creates impressive art.
This can vary from an atmospheric small image of a Spanish alley to a fragile hummingbird or an almost life-size image of a lion’s head. A lot of her work is shipped worldwide.
In 2020, the artists opened a shop with a small studio in the capital of La Gomera, San Sebastian. This allows visitors to see her at work on site during opening hours.
“Mirjam has an eye for the minimalistic, the small. Her work is characterized by its fine and elegant appearance”
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work is minuscule and precise. It is great to explain my technique and working method to visitors in the shop. I love the fine and detailed work that goes into making a Calligram. With only one colour and one tool – a very fine pen with lightfast black ink – I do my work. It requires concentration and precision to make a striking portrait or a memory of a deceased loved one. If the client is surprised or moved upon receipt, my mission has been accomplished.
